Lochcarron is an ideal base to explore the whole of Wester Ross to the North and the Isle of Skye to the West, which is now accessible free of charge via the Skye Bridge which is just over 30 minutes drive .

Take train from Strathcarron to Kyle of Lochalsh-check train times.

Swimming pool at Kyle and glass-bottomed boat trip.

Attadale Gardens with Japanese garden, fern collection and various sculptures. Gardens open April-Oct 10am-5.50pm , closed Sundays. Call in at Carron Pottery and Carron restaurant en route. www.attadalegardens.com

Plockton for seal trips, great food & where TV series Hamish Macbeth was filmed.

Visit Lochcarron weavers 2 miles along road to North Strome where tartan is still woven on the old looms and sold in the shop. Also sells a wide range of knitwear and Tweeds.

Carry on to ruins of Strome castle and then on the road to Ardaneaskan  stop at Smugglers Cove. Carry on to road end and lovely views of Plockton & The Cuillins.

Sands Bearch, Applecross

You must take a drive over the Bealach na Ba (Pass of the Cattle) one of the highest roads in Britain which climbs from sea level to 2,053 feet. Beautiful views from viewpoint  at  top.  Lovely food at Applecross  Inn . Go to beautiful beach at Sands where Monty Hall had his Beachcomber Cottage.  Carry on to Lonbain where huge rounded boulders are found on the shore and the derelict cottages were used to depict St Kilda in a film made in the 80s.Then round the coast road to Sheildaig.  A lovely friendly village with renowned Shieldaig Hotel. Look out for Sea Eagles here as they nest on Shieldaig Island. Daily boat trips are available from Shieldaig pier - www.torridonseatours.com.

An adventurous day trip in the summer to Skye via Strathcarron, Dornie (for Eilean Donan Castle), Sheil Bridge, Glenelg (famous for its Brochs), Kylerhea ferry onto Skye-check with the Tourist Information Centre for ferry times. Return via the Skye bridge, Balmacara and the road North at Auchtertyre.

Visit the Beinne Eighe reserve at Kinlochewe-45 mins drive- with pinewood walks, mountain trail and visitor centre.
